HMRC in conjunction with BASDA has developed a version of the OECD SAF-T for the UK, known as SAF-T UK. The new UK version uses the existing international OECD version with extra elements added to meet the UK Tax requirements. SAF-T (standard Audit File for Tax) has been developed by the OECD for carrying out tax audits and to develop cooperation between tax Administrations. This is a standardized electronic file which contains all information necessary for the performance of a VAT audit. The data is exportable from an original accounting system.

SAF-T was developed to be part of a wider ongoing program by the OECD to deal with the huge increase in eCommerce in recent years. Although the OECD have established the standards to be assumed within the SAF-T, self-determination has been given to each tax authority as to the exact format, level of detail and deadline.
